Square Introduces Tap to Pay on iPhone in Australia

Published about 1 year ago

Square has unveiled its Tap to Pay on iPhone technology in Australia, marking its first extension of the technology outside the USA. This feature, accessible within the Square Point of Sale, Square for Retail, and Square Appointments iOS apps, enables sellers of all sizes to accept contactless payments straight from their iPhone, without any additional hardware or extra cost.

Facilitating In-Person Commerce

The Tap to Pay on iPhone service aims to simplify in-person commerce for both new sellers and established businesses. Any Square merchant with a compatible iPhone can now accept contactless payments by opening the relevant Square app, making a sale, and presenting their iPhone to the buyer. Buyers can then complete the payment by tapping a contactless payment method such as a contactless credit or debit card, Apple Pay, or another digital wallet, directly onto the seller’s iPhone. The service also supports PIN entry, including accessibility options.

Ensuring Privacy and Security

This service utilizes the built-in features of the iPhone to ensure the privacy and security of businesses’ and customers’ data. When a payment is processed, Apple does not store card numbers on the device or on Apple’s servers.

An Adaptable, Mobile Solution

Equipped with Square’s intuitive software, Tap to Pay on iPhone offers sellers a flexible, mobile solution that can adapt to any environment while meeting the growing consumer preference for contactless payments. In collaboration with Apple’s contactless payment acceptance technology, Square’s software facilitates a smooth checkout experience, providing shoppers with the necessary information to confidently complete their purchase.

Positive Reception in the US

Since its introduction to Square’s millions of sellers in the US late last year, Tap to Pay on iPhone has proven to be a valuable addition to Square’s ecosystem. It has enabled a wide variety of sellers, from mobile professionals to beauty professionals, to conduct business securely and seamlessly without any additional hardware.

Jeremy Sproull, a business owner in Australia, is among the first to use Square’s Tap to Pay on iPhone in his nursery, Jez’s Seedlings. He praised the technology for its simplicity and ease of use for customers.

Marco Lamantia, Executive Director of Square in Australia, noted that Australian businesses are technologically adept and always seeking solutions to simplify their operations. He stated that Tap to Pay on iPhone helps lower the entry barriers for new businesses and allows existing sellers to explore new ways to sell with just their iPhone and the Square app.

The Tap to Pay on iPhone service is now available for use on an iPhone XS or later running the latest version of iOS, by downloading the Square POS, Square for Retail, or Square Appointments app.
